Why cant a lot of people accept humans are apes?

Humans were not apes. Apes and humans came from a common ancestor! People can't accept it because it goes against everything that they were born and raised to believe. Myself, born and raised Roman Catholic, but not after I learned science. Science is the true answer, but if someone hears more about religion, then they are bound to accept religion instead of the truth.
