Wood Stain On Inside Of Window Self.?

Hi I have an oak window self without any varnish and a wooden teak fireplace in my sitting room which i would like to match is it ok to give window self a light sanding and then stain it with teak stain or is there a better way of doing this would be grateful for any help thanks in advance.
