Red Cross Chain Emails, Just Chains? Or Real?

I keep getting chain mail, which has these boo-hoo-ing stories in them, and at the end, it says that Red Cross will give the poor thing 10 cents every time the email is forwarded. Now, I suspect strongly that it's just a way to get the chain mail around, but sometimes I wonder--- are they real?
