Lower front ball joint for a 96 taurus wont come loose?

my boyfreind has been trying to replace the drivers side front lower ball joint on my 96 ford taurus and it just wont come out hes been trying for several hrs with pb blaster and trying to knock it out with a sledge hammer but the handle on the hammer evan broke if anyone has any ideas please let me know thanx
