Yes you can hear the baby on both sides - especially when they are small - you can pick it up through the amniotic fluid too. The extra swooshing sounds you are hearing are the movements of the baby. the dopplers are using sound waves to pick up the heart beating and relay it back in sound - so when the baby moves it will also pick that up and relay it back as sound. The heart beat of your baby should be around 120-160BPM (you can count how many you hear in 6 seconds and multiply it by 10) If you hear something slower it is probably your heartbeat and not the baby's.
