Can a charitable organization make a monetary donation to another charitable organization?

Can a 501(c) 3 organization (a school in this case) make a monetary charitable donation to another charitable organization (the Red Cross in this case)? Our school collected money to donate to the Red Cross, but I wasn't sure how to record the transaction since our school receives donations as well.
